Overview
Respiratory care professionals need to be equipped with the knowledge required to master aerosol delivery and appropriately match medications and delivery devices to optimize patient outcomes. Aerosols and their uses, underlying scientific factors, and hazards are presented in this course. Jet nebulizers, ultrasonic nebulizers, and mesh nebulizers are also discussed, along with their operational properties, benefits, and drawbacks. The most common types of metered-dose inhalers are also reviewed, along with their characteristics. Various pharmacological agents that have specific requirements for safe and effective aerosolization are discussed. Examples of appropriate patient education are also included in this course.

The goal of this course is to educate respiratory care professionals in various care settings about aerosol delivery devices and considerations for their use.
 
After taking this course, you should be able to:
  • Explain the use of each type of aerosol generating device, including less common devices, and the benefits and drawbacks of each.
  • Explain methods for effective and efficient aerosol delivery.
  • Identify medications requiring special safety precautions for aerosol delivery.
