The goal of this course is to educate nurses about pox diseases including clinical presentation, transmission-based precautions, and associated vaccinations.

Throughout history, pox diseases have been and continue to be a source of human morbidity and mortality. Examples of pox diseases include chickenpox, monkeypox, and smallpox. In the U.S., the last smallpox outbreak occurred in 1949 with the last natural case of smallpox in the world recorded in Somalia in 1977 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021a). Although pox diseases are uncommon in the U.S. today, it is important for clinicians to be aware of these serious communicable diseases.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe identifying characteristics of smallpox, chickenpox, and monkeypox
  • List infection control methods for each illness and their rationale
  • Identify at least two potential contraindications to receiving the smallpox vaccine
  • Identify characteristics of chickenpox, monkeypox, and smallpox.
  • Recall transmission-based precautions for chickenpox, monkeypox, and smallpox.
  • Discuss the indications, contraindications, and adverse reactions associated with vaccinations for pox diseases.
