Overview
This course will discuss types of bariatric surgery and the psychosocial, metabolic, and physiological issues that may occur before and after bariatric surgery.Goals and Learning Outcomes
Extensively studied, obesity is a contributing factor to a variety of medical comorbidities, including stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, renal disease, respiratory issues, osteoarthritis, infections, and specific cancers. According to the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the likelihood of a patient with moderate obesity achieving and sustaining a normal body weight is less than 1%. Bariatric surgery has provided many patients struggling with obesity a chance to improve their health and overall quality of life. To provide optimal care for patients who are considering or have undergone bariatric surgery, nurses need to be aware of up-to-date information regarding bariatric surgery and its related nursing considerations.
The goal of this course is to equip nurses in the acute care setting with knowledge of the different bariatric surgical options and the psychosocial, metabolic, and physiological issues that patients may encounter before and after bariatric surgery.- Recall the different bariatric surgical options available for patients with obesity.
- Identify psychosocial and quality-of-life issues affecting patients before bariatric surgery.
- Recognize metabolic, physiological, and psychological changes that can occur in patients after bariatric surgery and the role nurses have in their care.
