This module provides information on how to assess and manage patients at risk for aspiration to prevent the dangerous complications of aspiration.

Swallowing is a complex process that requires the coordinated action of muscles in the tongue, pharynx, and esophagus. Many conditions and interventions can disrupt this process and increase the risk for aspiration. Dangerous complications of aspiration that can be prevented include aspiration pneumonitis and aspiration pneumonia. Due to the prevalence of the vulnerable population at risk for aspiration, it is important for all healthcare professionals to be knowledgeable about aspiration and recognize risk factors to protect their patients. The goal of this educational program is to provide nurses, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, and physicians in healthcare settings with information about how to identify patients at risk for aspiration and how to protect patients from aspirating.
