Goals and Outcomes
Goals and Learning Outcomes
Anticoagulants are some of the most common medications associated with adverse drug events in hospitalized patients. These ADEs are associated with increased mortality and increased healthcare costs. Many anticoagulant-related ADEs are the result of a medication error, which means that they are potentially preventable. This module will provide nurses with information about anticoagulants and The Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goals.
The goal of this educational program is to provide nurses in acute care with knowledge of the updates to The Joint Commission’s anticoagulant related National Patient Safety Goals.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify the most common anticoagulants for hospital patients
  • Describe critical aspects of nursing care when monitoring anticoagulants
  • Discuss the critical elements of patient teaching regarding anticoagulation therapy
