Goals and Outcomes
Goals and Learning Outcomes
Autoimmune diseases are a group of more than 100 clinically distinct, chronic disorders predominantly affecting women. These diseases - which include systemic lupus erythematosus, multiple sclerosis, scleroderma, Sjogren‘s syndrome, type 1 diabetes, sarcoidosis, fibromyalgia, and rheumatoid arthritis - are a leading cause of death and disability among young and middle-aged women in most industrialized countries. Healthcare professionals across disciplines should have information for patients on resources, including support groups in the community, and should provide patients with education about self-care.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Discuss at least four causes of autoimmune diseases
  • List two reasons for female predominance in autoimmune diseases
  • Describe general treatments for autoimmune diseases
