Overview
How much protein is really enough to build and maintain muscles? While the Recommended Dietary Allowance for healthy, sedentary adults is 0.8 g of protein/kg/day, this does not represent an optimal level of intake for athletes and those engaged in sports and exercise. Not only is the amount important but the protein source, dose and timing of intake are also crucial because proteins are not equal in their ability to support muscle building. To maintain and build muscle mass, some individuals turn to supplements, without understanding what to look for. This webinar addresses how much protein is necessary for muscle building, strategies to optimize protein intake and popular muscle-building supplements.Goals and Learning Outcomes
- Provide three reasons that athletes have higher protein requirements than the RDA of 0.8 g/kg and three strategies to optimize protein intake
- Describe the amount of protein needed to maximize muscle protein synthesis in young adults and the elderly
- Describe the pros and cons of using protein supplements to enhance intake and the role of the supplements creatine and/or HMB
