In 2019, an estimated 5.8 million Americans were living with Alzheimer’s disease. 5.6 million were older than age 65, and about 200,000 younger individuals had early-onset Alzheimer’s. An increasingly older population is expected to add to these numbers dramatically. Currently, a diagnosis of AD is made every 65 seconds. By 2050, nearly 14 million people ages 65 and older will be diagnosed with AD.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Explain two physiological effects music has on the body.
  • Identify three ways music, touch, exercise, and animal presence benefit patients with dementia.
  • State two ways alternative therapies can be used to calm patients.
  • Cite two emerging methods of care that can increase stress in patients and decrease the care burden for staff.
