Goals and Learning Outcomes

Chagas disease is one of the most common causes of congestive heart failure and sudden death in the world. It is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, a protozoan parasite that is transmitted to humans through the bite wound of an infected triatomine bug, also called the “kissing” bug.

Until recently, Chagas disease was rare in the United States. However, with the increased immigration in the past decades of T. cruzi-infected individuals from disease-endemic countries, Chagas disease is becoming a serious U.S. public health problem. In the United States today, about 300,000 people are infected, with 30,000 to 45,000 undiagnosed cardiomyopathy cases and about 60 to 300 congenital infections each year. Most people with the infection are from Mexico and unaware that they are infected. Healthcare professionals of various disciplines will need a good understanding of the disease, so they can educate infected patients about Chagas and about effective therapeutic options and the availability of treatment.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe the causes, transmission, and symptoms of Chagas disease.
  • Discuss why Chagas disease has become a public health problem in the United States.
  • Explain why most healthcare professionals are unaware of one of the most common causes of congestive heart failure and sudden death in the world.
