This course will equip nurses with the knowledge needed to safely manage patients with chest tubes and operate chest tube drainage systems.

Chest tube placement and maintenance can not only be stressful for a patient and their family, but also for the nursing staff. A thorough understanding of the principles surrounding chest tube placement and maintenance allows the nurse to properly manage the patient with a chest tube, resulting in better patient outcomes and satisfaction with care. Furthermore, it is vital to understand the risks, complications, and need for emotional support before, during, and after this procedure. This course is intended to equip nurses with the knowledge needed to safely manage patients before, during, and after chest tube placement; and to properly operate chest tube drainage systems, including troubleshooting.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe thoracic anatomy and physiology relative to the use of chest tubes.
  • Identify pathological conditions requiring chest tube placement.
  • Describe thoracic anatomy and pathophysiology relative to the use of chest tubes
  • Discuss risk factors and potential complications before, during, and after chest tube placement.
  • Describe the proper techniques for chest tube management.
