Overview
An update for healthcare professionals’ knowledge about the care of patients with chlamydia.Goals and Learning Outcomes
In 2017, more than 1.7 million cases of Chlamydia trachomatis infection were reported to the Centers for Disease Control, making chlamydia the most commonly reported notifiable disease in the United States. Due to the asymptomatic nature of this infection, it was estimated that a significant number of undiagnosed people were not represented in the statistical data. Many healthcare providers are unfamiliar with the frequency of this infection and its potentially permanent impact on people of reproductive age.
Demographic findings can guide healthcare practitioners in screening and detecting chlamydia. For example, the highest incidence of this infection occurs in young adults from ethnic minorities.2 Numerous antibiotic therapies are available for infected patients and their sexual partners; post-treatment follow-up is recommended. One of the most important roles clinicians can play is in primary prevention, before risky sexual practices take place. This continuing education program updates healthcare professionals’ knowledge about the diagnosis and care of patients with chlamydia.
