Goals and Outcomes
Goals and Learning Outcomes
According to a 2019 national survey, approximately 5.5 million Americans aged 12 years and older used cocaine in the past year. Once used in the medical field as an anesthetic, cocaine is now a schedule II substance due to its abuse potential. Cocaine is a powerful vasoconstrictor, adversely impacting the cardiac, pulmonary, renal, and neurological systems. The signs and symptoms of cocaine use and acute intoxication may overlap with those of other substances. Healthcare professionals need to be aware of the presentation of cocaine intoxication to establish early diagnosis and intervention. This educational activity will address the systemic effects of cocaine use as well as the management of cocaine intoxication. The goal of this course is to provide information about the systemic effects of cocaine use and management of acute cocaine intoxication.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Present a profile of cocaine, including incidence of use, action, and administration
  • List the effects of cocaine on the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems
  • Outline the acute cardiac management of a cocaine-intoxicated patient
  • Describe the drug cocaine, including incidence of use, action, and administration.
  • List at least three effects of cocaine on the cardiovascular, pulmonary, or renal systems.
  • Discuss the acute management of a patient with cocaine intoxication.
