Overview

Hand and wrist injuries are common, and account for a large number of visits to the ED. The hand and wrist are complex structures made up of a number of small bones, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Because the hand and wrist are used for almost all activities, any injury can lead to disability quickly. The complex biomechanics and function of the hand and wrist are also not easy to assess in a short period of time. In fact, some injuries to the wrist or hand are missed during a physical exam. Thus, it is vital for interprofessional team members to assess the hand and wrist properly in a slow, deliberate manner. Nerve function must always be evaluated fully.
