The goal of this course is to educate nursing professionals in the prevention, identification, and management of compassion fatigue.
Goals and Outcomes
Goals and Learning Outcomes
Compassion fatigue (CF) occurs when a caregiver experiences what experts call “secondary traumatic stress” in reaction to caring for those who are suffering from traumatic events. Although caregivers do not actually experience the event themselves, they are affected emotionally by caring for the patient. CF creates physical and emotional distress,   but it is not just a personal issue — it is a patient safety issue as well. Research has shown that CF may increase the risk of medical errors. Raising awareness of CF is, therefore, invaluable for both individuals and organizations.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify three signs and symptoms of compassion fatigue
  • Explain two ways to manage compassion fatigue
  • Describe three strategies for preventing compassion fatigue
