Overview
The goal of this course is to provide nurses with an overview of fetal cardiac development and the care required for these neonates and their families.Goals and Learning Outcomes
Nurses providing care for pregnant mothers and newborns need a working knowledge of fetal cardiac development and transition of post-birth cardiopulmonary circulation. Familiarity with early presenting signs and symptoms of congenital heart defects, as well as the nursing care required for these neonates and their families, is essential to the survival of these neonates. Specific attention is given to cyanotic congenital heart defects, such as transposition of the great arteries, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, obstructed total anomalous pulmonary venous return, and tetralogy of Fallot.
- Recall elements of normal fetal cardiac development and post-birth cardiopulmonary circulation transformation.
- Analyze congenital cardiac defects and the accompanying signs and symptoms that present in newborns.
- Identify interventions in the care of a neonate with congenital heart defects.
