Overview
The goal of this course is to provide nursing and pharmacy professionals with an overview of diabetes management in order to optimize patient-specific care.Goals and Learning Outcomes
Diabetes affects approximately 463 million people worldwide (International Diabetes Federation, 2020). Diabetes frequently presents together with other comorbidities and can result in life-threatening complications. Over the past several decades, the number of adults diagnosed with diabetes in the U.S. has increased drastically. In 2018, 34.2 million Americans had diabetes, and this number increases by approximately 1.5 million every year (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2020). Unfortunately, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), rising numbers are now seen more in low to middle-income countries (WHO, 2021).
- Review the prevalence and economic burden of patients with diabetes
- Identify the different diabetes classifications
- Review the diagnostic criteria for diabetes
- List the goals associated with glycemic targets and blood pressure from updated guidelines for diabetes management
- Identify hypoglycemia risk, severity levels, and treatment options
- Review current nonpharmacological and pharmacological treatment options for diabetes
- Describe four diabetes classifications and discuss the diagnostic criteria for each type.
