Overview
The cause of premenstrual disorders has eluded researchers, but many theories have been proposed. The most recent research indicates that the key component may be an imbalance in serotonin and gamma-aminobutyric acid levels associated with normal cyclical changes in female hormones during the five to 11 days before the onset of menses. This educational activity will delineate between PMS and PMDD as well as address management and patient education aimed at improving quality of life.

The goal of this continuing education program is to help nurses care for women experiencing menstrual cycle disorders. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Name three differences between premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)
  • Describe pharmacological, nonpharmacological and complementary therapies recommended for both PMS and PMDD
  • Discuss adverse effects and patient education related to medications used to treat PMDD
