The goal of this course is to provide information regarding the development, prevention, and care of diabetic foot ulcers.

Despite recent improvements in patient access to medical care in the U.S., diabetic foot ulcers continue to be a prevalent health problem. Understanding the pathophysiology of diabetic ulcers enhances screening and prevention skills and assessment of current wounds. Treatment requires participation of a multidisciplinary healthcare team to ensure appropriate wound care, monitoring, and ongoing reassessment to prevent recurrence. The goal of this course is to provide information regarding the development, prevention, and care of diabetic foot ulcers.

This course has a maximum of 3 exam attempts.

 


After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify three components of diabetic peripheral neuropathy and explain how they may lead to development of a diabetic foot ulcer
  • Identify strategies for ulcer prevention
  • Discuss critical elements of the physical examination that identify patients at risk for
  • Diabetic foot ulcers
  • Illustrate diagnostic and management options for infected or osteomyelitic diabetic foot ulcers
  • Describe principles of offloading, optimal wound care, and adjunct therapies in managing diabetic foot ulcers
  • Define barriers to effective care implementation for better disease management
  • Identify the pathophysiology behind the development of diabetic foot ulcers as well as risk factors and strategies for prevention.
  • Indicate elements of the physical examination that identify patients at risk for diabetic foot ulcers and important components of wound assessment.
  • Recall treatment strategies for diabetic foot ulcers and infection, important elements of wound care, and the role of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
