Overview
The purpose of this program is to provide healthcare professionals with information on the causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of diverticular disease.
Goals and Outcomes
Goals and Learning Outcomes
Diverticular disease includes asymptomatic diverticulosis, which is the presence of diverticula, as well as the more serious diverticulitis, in which infection and inflammation are usually present. Diagnosis is often difficult, and aging and insufficient dietary fiber are the two primary risk factors for diverticular disease. Serious and potentially life-threatening problems begin when undigested food, fecal matter and bacteria become trapped in the saclike diverticula. Treatments range from NG feedings and clear liquid diets for bowel rest to high-fiber diets to bulk stools and decrease transit time. There are a number of complications that can result from diverticular disease, each with specific treatment options. This module provides healthcare professionals with information about the prevalence and causes of diverticular disease, as well as symptoms of diverticulitis, diagnosis and treatment of common complications.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify the two primary risk factors for diverticulosis
  • Describe five symptoms of diverticulitis
  • Discuss three serious complications of diverticulitis
  • Provide dietary recommendations for a patient with diverticular disease
