Healthcare professionals must understand and adopt safety practices to ensure the smooth functioning of the healthcare team and the safety of their patients. This course discusses the importance of accurate and timely communication. It reviews unacceptable medical abbreviations and a standardized process for handoff communication.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe the patient safety issues associated with transcribing verbal and telephone orders
  • List The Joint Commission’s unacceptable abbreviations, acronyms, and symbols
  • Discuss the importance of handoff communication and timely and accurate reporting of critical test results
