The goal of this course is to educate healthcare professionals on how to treat and recognize radiation emergencies and patients exposed to chemical weapons.

Healthcare providers should be prepared to treat patients who have been exposed to chemical weapons or dangerous levels of radiation. The healthcare team’s ability to recognize and respond to chemical attacks or radiation exposure is critical to preparedness efforts. This course gives an overview of chemical agents that can be used as weapons and common radiation emergencies. It also discusses the symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of someone who has been exposed to chemical weapons or radiation.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify common injuries, radiological contamination routes, presenting signs and symptoms, and treatments associated with radiological incidents.
  • Recall the treatments used for victims of a radiation exposure.
  • Recall common symptoms related to a chemical attack.
  • Describe treatments for victims exposed to nerve agents, cyanides, respiratory irritants, and vesicants.
