Goals and Learning Outcomes
Recent data show most people in the U.S. die at home, which is the preference of the majority of America; however, many still die in institutions. Caring for a patient approaching the end of life continues to challenge the most skilled and educated practitioners. The healthcare team has an obligation to assist patients and families with end-of-life concerns such as changing roles in the family, anticipatory grief, loss of control of bodily functions, and other distressing symptoms. This module is an overview of end-of-life issues for clinicians across practice settings who provide comfort and support to dying patients and their families.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe physical and psychosocial issues associated with dying patients.
  • Identify two cultural variations when dealing with dying patients
  • Describe two nursing interventions for grieving families
  • Identify two cultural variations encountered in dying patients.
  • Describe two interdisciplinary team interventions for grieving families.
