This module provides healthcare professionals with information on the rising incidence of three life-threatening endemic fungal diseases in the U.S.
Goals and Outcomes
Goals and Learning Outcomes
Coccidioidomycosis, histoplasmosis and blastomycosis - caused respectively by Coccidioides immitis, Histoplasma capsulatum and Blastomyces dermatitidis - are endemic mycoses, or fungal diseases, that have emerged as important health threats for people who live or travel in certain regions of the U.S. Each disease is caused by a dimorphic fungus, which is a fungus that grows as a mold with septate hyphae (threadlike filaments divided by cross walls into sections) in the soil, and as a yeast cell or spherule in the human body. People acquire these diseases almost exclusively by inhaling the pathogens in their mold phase from dust in the environment. Endemic fungi are capable of causing infections in both healthy and immunocompromised people. This module provides healthcare professionals of various disciplines with information on the rising incidence of three life-threatening endemic fungal diseases in the U.S.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Name three endemic fungi of medical importance in the U.S. and describe their geographic distribution
  • Describe the three diseases associated with dimorphic fungi
  • Explain why endemic fungal diseases are difficult to diagnose and treat
