This module provides nurses, physicians, and respiratory therapists with the most current information on two enterovirus outbreaks, EV-D68 and EV71.
Goals and Outcomes
Goals and Learning Outcomes
In mid-August 2014, hundreds of children nationwide were hospitalized with a rapidly spreading, severe respiratory disease called enterovirus D68 (EV-D68). This virus can cause breathing difficulty and exacerbate wheezing and hypoxia, especially in children with a history of asthma or some type of reactive airway disease. The evidence also supports a causal relationship between EV-D68 and an acute neurological illness characterized by paralysis and cranial nerve dysfunction (including double vision, facial droop, and swallowing and speaking difficulty). This module provides nurses, physicians, and respiratory therapists with the most current information on two enterovirus outbreaks, EV-D68 and EV71.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify the risk factors, symptoms, and routes of transmission for EV-D68 and EV71
  • Discuss the association between asthma and an increased risk of severe respiratory illness with EV-D68
  • Describe infection control practices that can reduce outbreaks of EV-D68 and EV71
