Overview
A 2012 Rand survey reported that as many as 15% of all employed RNs in the United States were foreign born. Foreign-born and foreign-educated nurses face multiple challenges when entering the U.S. healthcare workforce. This continuing education program will help foreign-born and foreign-educated nurses become more familiar with the American healthcare system and patient care in the U.S., while also helping American-born nurses to increase their understanding of issues that may emerge in a culturally diverse workgroup.Goals and Learning Outcomes
- Define collectivist and individualist cultures, and list their basic characteristics
- Distinguish between American patterns of communication and your own in terms of reliance on context, time, and space
- Identify effective communication strategies that satisfy the expectations of American patients
