Overview
The goals of this course are to educate nurses about the use of sedation for GI procedures and to review the pharmacology associated with sedation.Goals and Learning Outcomes
This course will provide the critical thinking tools needed to effectively utilize pharmacotherapeutics commonly used as treatment of disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. The names, classifications, side effects, and adverse reactions included will provide the gastroenterology nurse the knowledge to provide effective care and support clinical education of patients when monitoring drug therapies.
The goals of this course are to educate nurses about the use of sedation for GI procedures and to review the pharmacology associated with sedation.
- Describe the responsibilities of the nurse in the administration and monitoring of patient medication regimens
- Discuss the indications and contraindications for the individual drugs that belong to each drug category
- Understand the different drug classes used in the treatment of disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.
- Identify best practices and techniques for the administration of medication therapies specific to gastroenterology patients in clinical and non-clinical settings.
- Discuss the levels of sedation outlined by The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) in their Practice Guidelines for Sedation and Analgesia.
- Describe the different medications, including their indications, contraindications, risks, and benefits, used in the treatment of disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.
- Identify the responsibilities of the nurse in administration of patient medications.
