The liver is a major organ of the gastrointestinal system that performs functions related to digestion and nutrient absorption. It is vital for the gastroenterology nurse to be familiar with the anatomy, physiology, and common pathologies of the small intestine, and to understand its relationships to the other parts of the digestive system. This course provides a review of the anatomy and physiology of the small intestine as well as common pathologies and related treatments of this important organ.

The goal of this course is to educate nurses in gastroenterology settings about disorders of the small intestine.


After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Understand the role of the nurse in the care and treatment of patients with disorders and diseases of the small intestine
  • Describe the pathophysiology of the small intestine
  • Discuss the mechanisms of absorption, secretion and motility of the small intestine as they relate to health and disease
  • Identify the normal anatomy and physiology of the small intestine.
  • Identify the mechanisms of absorption, secretion, and motility of the small intestine as they relate to health and disease.
  • Communicate the pathophysiology of the small intestine.
  • Define the role of the nurse in the care and treatment of patients with disorders and diseases of the small intestine.
