Overview
Because coronary artery disease continues to dominate the U.S. healthcare system, nurses in the ED and ICU must develop a wealth of knowledge about the identification of myocardial ischemia and infarction and develop a standard, evidence-based protocol for the care of patients with CAD (O’Gara et al., 2013). With the development of a team approach to the patient with chest pain, time-dependent treatment of myocardial ischemia and infarction based on evidence-based practice reduces morbidity and mortality.
Goals and Learning Outcomes
- Differentiate the signs and symptoms of myocardial infarction for men and women.
- Describe two diagnostic studies for myocardial infarction.
- Discuss the emergency management of myocardial infarction.
- Identify nursing assessments, interventions, and monitoring for those with myocardial infarction.
