Goals and Outcomes
Goals and Learning Outcomes
Every interaction with a healthcare professional, including what is communicated and what is observed, affects patients’ experience of care. Effectively communicating with patients, families, and colleagues is the foundation for a therapeutic and positive patient experience. Whether advocating for a patient, establishing rapport and empathy with a patient and their support system, or communicating with other members of the interprofessional team, your ability to effectively communicate is consistently challenged. Collaboration between interprofessional team members and patient satisfaction are improved when healthcare professionals recognize the factors that influence communication and consistently apply communication techniques proven to be effective. The goal of this course is to educate nursing professionals on strategies to improve communication skills.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe how the interprofessional team’s communication skills influence the patient experience and HCAHPS survey scores
  • Identify at least three factors that influence the communication process
  • Describe at least three elements of effective communication
  • Explain three ways to handle requests
  • Discuss the appropriate way to provide reassurance and comfort
  • Discuss two effective communication models to use in your practice
  • Identify the impact of communication on patient care, factors impacting communication, and components of communication.
  • Describe strategies to improve communication skills with patients, families, and team members.
