Overview
The goal of this course is to inform healthcare professionals with knowledge on caring for patients with hyperemesis gravidarum.Goals and Learning Outcomes
Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy (NVP) occur in approximately 70% to 85% of all pregnancies and severe symptoms can lead to health complications that may endanger both the expectant mother and their unborn child (DynaMed, 2019). Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) affects about 0.3% to 3% of pregnancies and is defined as recurrent nausea and vomiting that results in weight loss, severe malnourishment, and dehydration (London et al., 2017). This educational activity will address the etiology, assessment, and management of this condition.
- Discuss the etiology and pathophysiology of HG
- Describe assessment findings, including signs and symptoms along with pertinent laboratory values
- Explain treatment options for HG
- Compare the pros and cons of enteral vs. parenteral nutrition in the treatment of HG
