Overview
The caveat "first do no harm" carries with it the responsibility to understand the wily ways of microorganisms and thus prevent transmission of infectious diseases and care for those who are afflicted by them. In particular, nurses need to stay up to date on the guidelines for caring for patients with major diseases that threaten the public health, such as TB, hepatitis, and HIV/AIDS, as they choose barrier devices and provide treatment.
