The goal of this course is to provide catheterization laboratory professionals in acute settings with information about interventional cardiology equipment.

Coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction, commonly called a heart attack, represent a considerable impact to health worldwide. Given the significance of heart disease to health across populations, it is unsurprising that a variety of procedures and pieces of clinical equipment have been designed to help address these issues. This module will discuss the uses and history of interventional cardiology procedures. Coronary lesions and the applicable classification system will be described. Guiding catheters, guide wires, balloons, and stents, along with their uses and characteristics will also be discussed. Relevant aspects of anticoagulation and anti-platelet therapy will be explained. 

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Delineate lesions that meet criteria for intervention.
  • Identify guiding catheter and guidewire characteristics.
  • Delineate balloon selection properties.
  • Address anticoagulation strategies.
  • Describe principles and concepts related to interventional cardiology, heart disease, and the indications for interventional cardiac catheterization.
  • Describe the types and characteristics of commonly used equipment and devices for interventional cardiac catheterization.
  • Discuss common anticoagulant and antiplatelet medications used to treat interventional cardiac catheterization patients.
  • Identify commonly used guiding catheters in the cannulation of the left and right coronary arteries for the purpose of providing TIMI flow.
  • Identify the need coronary ancillary treatment options such as atherectomy, left ventricular support devices, intra-aortic balloon pumps and pacemakers.
  • Verbalize the commonly used interventional wires and coronary balloons for support and for trackablity.
