Goals and Outcomes
Goals and Learning Outcomes
Ischemic stroke is a time-sensitive emergency that requires prompt, definitive treatment. The primary focus of treatment for ischemic stroke is reestablishing perfusion to the area(s) of the brain affected. This can be achieved through the use of pharmacologic or mechanical interventions/treatments. Endovascular interventions such as thrombectomy and stenting procedures are an option for some patients. These procedures are image-guided, minimally invasive, and show promise for minimizing patient disability and improving functional outcomes. The impact of these treatments on mortality has yet to be proved. Healthcare professionals in acute settings should be familiar with all treatment options, understand the need for quick interventions, and recognize how their role can improve patient outcomes.
