The goal of this educational program is to provide nurses in acute care with information about adolescents.

Working with adolescents is an exciting and challenging opportunity for nurses. An understanding of the basic concepts of adolescent health provides a framework for effective care for adolescents. This continuing education course includes a review of pubertal growth and maturation as well as normal psychosocial development of the adolescent. This framework forms the basis for understanding the importance of adolescent nutrition. The course concludes with guidelines for effective communication, with a focus on reducing risk through enhancing resiliency.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Discuss the parameters of normal pubertal development in terms of sequence and tempo.
  • Identify the developmental tasks of adolescents.
  • Describe the effects of physical changes on psychosocial development.
  • Discuss the cognitive changes that occur during adolescence.
  • Describe the nutritional requirements to support adolescent growth.
  • Identify the principles of resiliency in promoting healthy development.
  • Describe the parameters of consent and confidentiality in adolescence.
  • Identify communication techniques that are effective with adolescents.
  • Describe how to take a social history.
