To provide healthcare providers with information about the manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus and the management of people with the disease.
Goals and Outcomes
Goals and Learning Outcomes
Systemic lupus erythematosus is a complex, incurable disease and chronic condition. It can affect most body systems. There are three main types of lupus: cutaneous lupus erythematosus, drug-induced lupus erythematosus, and systemic lupus erythematosus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that it is not a "reportable" condition and that it would be costly to determine an accurate number of people affected. Thus, prevalence has been difficult to determine. It is a challenge to diagnose because there is no lab test for diagnosis. In addition, symptoms wax and wane, and are similar to other conditions. Healthcare providers knowledgeable about the manifestations of lupus, patient education resources, and treatment options can help patients more effectively manage the complexities of their disease.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe the three types of lupus
  • Identify the symptoms of systemic lupus erythematosis
  • Discuss the importance of patient communication as an integral part of healthcare intervention
