The goal of this course is to educate nurses, respiratory therapists, and radiology services in all types of healthcare settings on CAP.

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) can lead to sepsis. Furthermore, CAP is one of the most common infections seen in the emergency department. Each patient can present with varying severity of illness, from mild to severe, necessitating treatment in an outpatient setting or the intensive care unit (ICU). Timely interventions from multiple team members can significantly reduce morbidity and mortality rates. You will learn how CAP is defined, associated pathogens, signs and symptoms, along with treatment of patients with CAP. This course will go into detail about aspiration pneumonia. 

This course has a maximum of 3 exam attempts.

 


After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Discuss clinical practice guidelines recommendations and rationale for diagnosis and treatment of pneumonia developing in non-hospitalized patients.
  • Describe etiology, risk factors, signs and symptoms, and complications associated with community-acquired pneumonia.
  • Describe nursing and nutrition interventions for patients with community-acquired pneumonia.
  • Recall general clinical practice guidelines for CAP
  • Describe the etiology, risk factors, signs, and symptoms of CAP
  • Describe team interventions for CAP
  • List the differential diagnosis in a patient with suspected HCAP
  • Review the organisms associated with HCAP
  • Review the organisms associated with HCAP
