Overview
The goal of this course is to educate nurses and registered dietitians/nutritionists in the acute care setting on diverticular disease.Goals and Learning Outcomes
Diverticular disease is the most common gastrointestinal (GI) disease among those living in the U.S. but the disease presents with vague and sometimes conflicting symptoms that can be difficult to decipher (Wales VanReken et al., 2020). Diverticular disease can often be confused with colon cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, or Crohn’s disease. The purpose of this course is to provide healthcare professionals with information about the pathophysiology, risk factors, and symptoms of diverticular disease. Additionally, best practice guidelines will be reviewed for the diagnosis, management, and prevention of the disease.
- Identify the two primary risk factors for diverticulosis
- Describe five symptoms of diverticulitis
- Discuss three serious complications of diverticulitis
- Provide dietary recommendations for a patient with diverticular disease
- Recall the etiology and pathophysiology of diverticular disease.
- Recognize the symptoms of diverticular disease.
- Determine appropriate management strategies for the treatment of diverticular disease.
