Overview
The goal of this course is to enhance nurses’ abilities to care for adult patients with HIV-opportunistic infections.
Goals and Outcomes
Goals and Learning Outcomes
Globally, millions have become infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and have a great risk of morbidity and mortality from opportunistic infections associated with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Although the incidence of opportunistic infections (OIs) is less among people being treated with antiretroviral therapy (ART), OIs will remain a significant cause of illness for those without access to antiretroviral therapy or for those with suboptimal response to treatment. Familiarity with the various ways a disease may present in a patient is necessary. This course reviews the symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and nursing considerations for some of these infections and conditions.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify clinical signs and symptoms of HIV opportunistic infections and understand general testing and treatments guidelines for these conditions.
  • Describe actions to assist in the care and prevention of opportunistic infections.
  • Describe the impact effective antiretroviral treatment has on the incidence and morbidity associated with opportunistic infections
