Goals and Learning Outcomes
Shock is a clinical syndrome marked by the inability of the body to meet its own oxygen needs. Shock can originate from a wide range of causes including overwhelming infections, myocardial infarctions, and traumatic injuries. Early recognition and intervention are key to preventing a cascade of events that can lead to multi-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and death. An integrated team of nurses, providers, and allied health personnel is crucial for proper management. This module will provide an overview of shock as well as one of the potential sequelae of untreated shock — coagulopathies (specifically disseminated intravascular coagulation [DIC]). The goal of this continuing education module is to provide information regarding the recognition and management of different types of shock and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Define shock, describe the pathophysiology of shock, and list symptoms associated with and treatment modalities for each form of shock.
  • Define the various components of hemodynamics and how they are measured.
  • Describe how shock can cause coagulopathies and symptoms that may indicate the onset of disseminated intravascular coagulation.
  • Identify abnormalities in laboratory values and treatment modalities considered for disseminated intravascular coagulation.
