Overview
The goal of this course is to teach acute care nurses about different types of thoracic trauma injuries, their clinical manifestations, and patient care.
Goals and Outcomes
Goals and Learning Outcomes
In this course, you will learn about types of thoracic trauma and how to identify and care for those with thoracic trauma within the framework of the trauma nursing process. Blunt and penetrating chest trauma is common in traumatically injured patients and account for 20 to 25% of trauma deaths (Narayanan et al., 2018). The trauma nurse needs to be able to identify and intervene when a patient sustains thoracic injuries to reduce morbidity and mortality.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Explain mechanisms of injury seen in thoracic trauma.
  • List types of thoracic injuries.
  • Describe the clinical manifestations associated with types of thoracic injuries.
  • Name the diagnostic processes and findings associated with types of thoracic trauma.
  • Discuss treatment and nursing care of patients suffering from thoracic trauma.
  • Classify mechanisms and patterns of injury seen in thoracic trauma.
  • Identify the diagnostic processes and findings associated with types of thoracic trauma.
  • Recognize nursing care, assessments, and treatment of patients suffering from thoracic trauma.
