The goal of this course is to review nurse practitioners in the adult gerontology acute care setting with common musculoskeletal and integumentary conditions

This course is part of a series to aid in preparation for the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner exam. The course will focus on reviewing normal anatomy and physiology and associated pathologies of common integumentary (i.e., cellulitis, folliculitis, exfoliative skin diseases such as Steven Johnsons syndrome and TENS) and musculoskeletal conditions (i.e. fractures, dislocations, metabolic bone diseases, amputations, and infections) in the acute care setting. Additionally, there is review of rhabdomyolysis, gait disturbances, and pressure injury management. The adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioner (AGACNP) may seek consultation with specialists in orthopedics, general surgery, neurology, rheumatology, dermatology, wound care specialists, and infectious disease to manage these conditions.

The goal of this course is to review nurse practitioners in the adult gerontology acute care setting with common musculoskeletal and integumentary conditions. This course is not affiliated with the ANCC Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) board certification examination.


After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Determine strategies to prevent complications to the musculoskeletal and integumentary systems in the acute care setting
  • Identify medical complications and treatments associated with the musculoskeletal and integumentary system
  • Review acute injuries and treatment of the musculoskeletal and integumentary system
  • Discuss the anatomy and physiology of the musculoskeletal and integumentary systems
  • Recognize the anatomy and physiology of the musculoskeletal and integumentary systems and associated medical complications.
  • Determine treatment of musculoskeletal and integumentary pathologies and strategies to prevent complications in the acute care setting.
