Overview
Cardiovascular disease kills about a half million women in the U.S. annually, claiming about one life per minute. Little is known about cardiovascular physiology and treatment in women because, traditionally, researchers have not included them in clinical trials. Some health professionals and the public still harbor the misconception that women do not get heart disease. However, an emerging body of knowledge indicates that heart disease is not only present but different in women than in men — from presenting symptoms and the age at which they first appear to the response to diagnostic testing and need for intervention.
