Goals and Learning Outcomes

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a condition characterized by uncontrollable thoughts and repetitive behaviors and is associated with varying levels of functional impairment. Once thought rare, it is now recognized as one of the five most common causes of mental health disability worldwide. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), about 1.2% of the U.S. population age 18 or older has OCD in a given year (2017). This continuing education module will help you understand how to help patients and those around them cope with what can be a debilitating psychological disorder.

The goal of this course is to educate clinicians in acute care facilities with tools to aid in the care of patients with OCD.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Relate incidence and genetic factors to the risk of acquiring OCD
  • Identify assistive tools to diagnose OCD, as well as barriers to diagnosis
  • Summarize the roles of clinicians and support persons in the management of OCD
  • Recognize the clinical features of OCD
  • Describe pharmacological management of OCD, including adverse effects from medications
  • Identify nonpharmacological therapeutic treatment options and interventions for patients with OCD
