Goals and Learning Outcomes

Oncology emergencies are dangerous complications resulting from cancer. Conditions covered in this course include the more common emergencies, such as sepsis and tumor lysis syndrome, with mention of more rare conditions, such as superior vena cava syndrome and malignant spinal cord compression. Coagulation emergencies and metabolic emergencies are also discussed.

Emergent situations require prompt and thorough communication among interprofessional healthcare team members for more positive outcomes.

The goal of this course is to provide nurses, laboratory professionals, and radiology technologists in the acute care setting with an overview of what constitutes an oncology emergency and current best practice interventions and recommendations.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Recall three general client teaching points to help prevent, identify diagnostic methods for, and treat oncology emergencies.
  • Identify at least three oncology emergencies, including pathophysiology, etiology, and clinical presentation information.
  • Recognize at least two immediate interventions for different oncology emergencies.
