Overview
Overview

More than 54.1 million people undergo surgical procedures annually in the United States, and many suffer from avoidable adverse events. This course provides evidence-based practice (EBP) information to promote the management of hypothermia, hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, and handover communication in the perioperative setting. Each topic includes an overview of EBP information that healthcare providers can apply to reduce patient harm from adverse events. The ability to apply the information depends on a solid understanding of EBP in the perioperative setting.

Goals and Outcomes
Goals and Learning Outcomes
The goal of this course is to equip nurses and surgical technologists in the perioperative setting with knowledge of the most current professional guidelines and the best available evidence to help facilitate changes in practice that support optimal patient outcomes.
After taking this course, you should be able to:
  • Determine why evidence-based practice matters and how it can be used to reduce common perioperative errors, such as surgical site infections; wrong-site, wrong-side, or wrong-person surgery; retained surgical items; and missing or mislabeled specimens.
  • Recall the risk factors and interventions for the prevention of hypothermia, the signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia, and the physiologic parameters of hyperglycemia.
  • Identify the components of an effective perioperative handover.
