The goal of this course is to provide information about pediatric abusive head trauma in infants and children
Goals and Outcomes
Goals and Learning Outcomes
Pediatric abusive head trauma, or shaken baby syndrome, is a severe form of child abuse that most often involves infants. The term “shaken baby syndrome” has been used for decades to describe abusive head trauma inflicted on infants and young children, but AHT is now the preferred terminology. Shaking an infant can cause neurological injury, but blunt impact, or a combination of shaking and blunt impact, can also cause injury, hence the term AHT. This course explains risk factors, clinical presentation, and physician findings of AHT. It also provides prevention strategies.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify the risk factors, clinical presentation, and physical findings of pediatric abusive head trauma in children
  • Discuss the mechanism of injury of pediatric abusive head trauma and the diagnostic workup and prognosis
  • Describe how healthcare providers as a team can educate families, the public, and other healthcare professionals about pediatric abusive head trauma to help reduce the incidence, morbidity, and mortality
