Overview
The goal of this course is to educate emergency medical professionals with information on the management of pediatric tracheostomy emergencies.
Goals and Outcomes
Goals and Learning Outcomes
Pediatric patients with congenital and acquired conditions may require a tracheostomy tube. To care for a child with a tracheostomy tube, clinicians must understand the reason the child requires a tracheostomy, the functional status of the child’s upper airway, and the child’s medical condition. Children with tracheostomies routinely receive care in both home and healthcare settings. Patients with tracheostomies can experience complications and there is an increased risk of death associated with tracheostomy-related emergencies. The management of a child with a tracheostomy requires clinicians to be skilled in routine and emergency tracheostomy care.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Explain the anatomy and pathophysiology of the pediatric respiratory system
  • Describe tracheostomy management and care for a child
  • List tracheostomy emergency prevention and response in the home for a pediatric patient with a tracheostomy
  • Discuss the history, and anatomy and pathophysiology of the pediatric respiratory system.
  • Describe tracheostomy management and care for a child.
  • Identify tracheostomy emergency prevention and response strategies in the home for a pediatric patient with a tracheostomy.
