To discuss the management of pediatric tracheostomies and emergencies associated with them for home care nurses and dietitians.
Goals and Outcomes
Goals and Learning Outcomes
To care for a child with a tracheostomy tube, healthcare professionals must understand the reason the child needs a tracheostomy tube, the functional status of the child‘s upper airway, and the child‘s medical condition. Children with tracheostomies are routinely being cared for in the home and community settings. Tracheostomies are not without complications, and numerous studies show that there is an increased mortality rate associated with tracheal complications during emergencies. Management of a child with a tracheostomy requires home and community nurses to be skilled in routine and emergency tracheostomy care. This module provides information on the management of pediatric tracheostomies and emergencies associated with them for home care nurses, medical day care nurses, school nurses, other nurses working in the community with children with tracheostomies, dietitians, and EMS professionals.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Explain why a child may require a tracheostomy
  • Describe routine tracheostomy management and emergency preparation and prevention in the home
  • Describe a step-wise approach to tracheostomy emergency response in the home
