Overview
How to identify and treat postpartum psychiatric disorders.Goals and Learning Outcomes
The period following childbirth is a vulnerable time for women to experience a spectrum of psychiatric disorders that range from self-limiting “baby blues” to grave postpartum psychosis. Women are often ashamed when their experience of new motherhood is a time of sadness, depression, or anxiety. Many women do not get adequate support or treatment, which can have long-lasting and damaging effects on the mother, infant, and by extension, the entire family unit.
- Recognize the four main postpartum psychiatric disorders.
- Identify the signs and symptoms and screening recommendations for the various types of postpartum psychiatric disorders.
- Select appropriate interventions for mothers with postpartum psychiatric disorders.
