Healthcare providers face many difficulties when prescribing controlled substances for management of acute and chronic pain, anxiety disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The pressure to adequately treat patients suffering from these conditions, coupled with current public health problems such as rising drug overdose rates, creates a major dilemma for healthcare providers. Determining which patients could benefit from the prescription of controlled substances and which patients may suffer adverse consequences by taking these medications is not always easy.
The goal of this course is to educate healthcare providers on methods to safely and responsibly prescribe controlled substances to patients.

- Identify roles of commonly prescribed controlled substances in certain disorders and diseases
- Describe ways in which nurses, pharmacists, physicians, and other healthcare professionals can collaborate to ensure responsible prescribing of controlled substances
- Identify strategies for initiating opioid therapy in patients with acute pain, and the relative potency of different class agents.
- Recall federal requirements associated with prescribing different schedules of controlled substances for pain management, anxiety disorder, or ADHD.
- Describe strategies employed by prescribers to mitigate risks associated with use of controlled substances.
